It's kinda like MS Excel felt when it first came out. :-) ), you can also set conditional restarts for software, etc. I simply blacklisted it, now it gets terminated before it could annoy me ever again. If you are into more (advanced user), you get to use a plethora of options - you can blacklist programs (you know how something crashes and windows launches that stupid dump report that more often than not requires a click to go away?. It feels good to get attention, right? :-)Ī special Gaming Mode also comes with Process Lasso, where the software makes sure that no other program interferes with the best gaming experience your computer can afford. Naturally, it didn't make my old piece of junk any faster, Process Lasso just made it pay more attention to me. Process Lasso dealt with that immediately, I didn't anymore had to wait forever for clicks or typing to register with the computer. Process Lasso, at a minimum (if you are a rookie user) can help you by quietly (in the background) making sure that whatever you are doing (whatever is in focus) will get high priority, meaning more CPU time, etc., basically the most attention your computer can give.Īs an example, it has helped me out with some seriously under par rigs, where I had to run a lot of things, and there were constant hangups (the computer not responding). Yes, this program is about memory management, CPU cores, etc., but you need not worry - it has a setting where it basically sets itself up without you having to do anything! because any of these (plus other reasons), will result in lags - your computer's resources used up faster than they become available. a few badly written programs, which hog memory. too many things installed and running in the background simultaneously.ģ. Honestly, I haven't downloaded this incarnation yet, but having been a faithful user for many years, I want to make a general comment about it - this is great if you have:Ģ. This, and more, make it the first truly intelligent RAM management algorithm ever conceived – and it’s about time! I mean, all we’re doing here is not being dumb about RAM optimization.Got lags? (The computer not responding, movies becoming slideshows, FPS dropping in games, etc.) This software will do GREAT for you. It has many other criteria built-in, such as never trimming the application you’re actively engaged with. It politely asks memory hogging background processes to release their working sets. It doesn’t force everything out of memory all at once. So what does Process Lasso’s SmartTrim do differently? Well, it acts conservatively and with sophisticated selectivity. Enter SmartTrim – The intelligent RAM Manager Certainly we make absolutely no claim that SmartTrim will make your PC better, faster, or more pretty. We know users want control over their PCs. Every time they do this your PC has to essentially pause and recover from this brutish operation!īitsum’s SmartTrim, part of Process Lasso, is an effort to mitigate the negative effects of improperly written RAM optimizers & imperfect RAM usage, while giving users the control they desire. That immediately causes those processes to page back in the memory that was being actively used (page faults). However, they do so for ALL running processes, regardless of whether the process has any excessive RAM use or not. Others use the correct APIs to clear the working set. Many allocate as much memory as they can, until they are finally denied memory. Perhaps the biggest reason we object to these ‘optimizers’ is that the implementation of every one we’ve evaluated has been atrocious. Now, there may be extremely rare examples of violations of the ‘protection’ surrounding a process’ virtual memory space, but they aren’t applicable here. Modern operating systems like Windows are designed in such a way that when a process terminates, it takes all its allocated virtual memory with it. Misconception: There is leftover junk in RAM Any byte of memory is retrieved as quickly as any other, no matter where it is located. That means there is no mechanical head moving (as in HDDs & optical drives) from one spot to another. Caches can be thrown away, thus can be held in this ‘free’ memory. Basically, it’s mostly used to mean how much memory is available to applications for allocation. So, then you get into the definition of ‘free memory’. Also note that memory considered ‘free’ is normally used as a disk cache by operating systems. REALITY: Some free RAM is good, but your RAM is the fastest storage medium you have, so ideally you want it to be fully utilized. We’ve written articles trying to correct the misapprehensions that fed this beast of a market. Bitsum has always been very critical of the RAM optimizer market, even during the height of its popularity – and with good reason.
